European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad 2012

EGMO 2012 has now finished; we thank everyone who helped to make it such a success. The exam papers and final results are available; many photographs from EGMO 2012 are on our Facebook page. The pre-EGMO welcome message follows.

We are pleased to announce that the first European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad will take place at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge in April 2012. The competition will be similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries will send teams consisting of their strongest four female mathematicians of school age. The inspiration behind this competition is the Chinese Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO)—now an international event. The UK sent a team to compete in the CGMO for the first time in August 2010 (see report). It is hoped that EGMO 2012 will be the first of many European Girls’ Olympiads; EGMO 2013 will be held in Luxembourg. The aim of this competition is to give more girls an opportunity to perform on an international stage. Through this competition and the associated talent search and preparation we hope to increase the participation of girls in mathematics competitions and the UK IMO squad. Anyone interested in finding out more about the competition or how they can be involved should contact us.
